Mali and Songhai empires thrived while situated literally on the edge of the Sahara. Geography isn’t destiny.
Outside of colonialism and geography, some factors worked in Europe’s favor:
- Protestantism (created individualism in Europe)
- Knowledge sharing (artisans stopped gatekeeping trade secrets)
- Less persecution for sharing unorthodox ideas (facilitated innovation)
