E = MC Squared (‘C’ is For ‘Consciousness’)

I learned a powerful lesson in consciousness when I went to my favorite supermarket some months ago.

I needed a black dye, but I did not know whether or not it was available in the store because I had never needed it.

So, I asked one of the workers there and sure enough, the guy directed me to the aisle where the dye was.

Equipped with the knowledge, I walked towards an aisle that I had passed nearly a thousand times before and picked up my desired item.

While I now knew where to get a black dye anytime I need it in the future, there are still thousands and thousands of products on other aisles in the supermarket that I was totally oblivious to their existence.

Did my ignorance make them less real?

No. The products were still there, but since I did not have the knowledge and need for these products, I was unable to see or experience them – in spite of the fact that they were located in the same supermarket!

You see, everything you’d ever need to live a successful and fulfilled life has already been created. It already exists. Just like my dye was already on its aisle in my favorite supermarket. However, just like I was unable to access my dye till I got help, a lot of people will never be able to access everything that has been provided for them because they do not have a consciousness of where to get it!

Your consciousness is one of the most potent forces that govern the quality of your experiences on this side of eternity. However, by understanding how to harness the power of your consciousness, you would be able to unleash every single drop of potential that God has wrapped within the fibers of your essence.

This is the deal: People have not yet gotten it into their craniums that there are two aspects to life. These are: The physical realm, which constitutes of all that we can interact with our 5 senses and logically explain. And the spiritual realm, which is the invisible causal realm of completed perfect forms which can only be sensed by our spirits.

You see, every individual is essentially made up of 3 parts: spirit, soul and body. However, ever since the Fall, every child given birth to had a dead spirit that was separated from the Life-Giving Essence of God. So, such a child could only interact with his environment with his five senses (body) and his will, emotions, intellect, and conscience (soul). However, when such a person accepts Christ as his Lord and Savior, the very Life-Giving Essence of God quickens the spirit of such man – making it alive and responsive to God!

Unfortunately, spending years on a worldview which is solely conscious of the physical world can take its toll on your consciousness and the quality of your life. It’s only when you have renewed your mind on the Word of God (Romans 12:2) that such mental shackles are shattered.

For instance, Ephesians 2:6 tells us that as believers in the finished work of Christ, God has “made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus.”

Note that the verb in that verse didn’t say ‘we will be made to sit’ or ‘He is making us sit’

Nope. The verse says God ‘has made us sit together in heavenly places.’

That’s past tense. A done deal!

But how can we be seated in ‘heavenly places’ if we are still very much alive in the physical realm?

Well, that’s because we live twice! In the spiritual realm, as well as, in the physical realm.

Yet, so many people don’t have the right consciousness and they live as though all there is to life is in the ‘here’ and ‘now’. A few more believe that their forays into the spiritual realm would only kickoff when they physically die.

Nothing could be further from the truth!

Jesus said, “…he that believeth on me hath everlasting life” (John 3:16, 6:47).

Do you think Jesus was merely referring to life in heaven after one’s death?

No, it includes the perks too. He was referring to the manifestation of the realities of heaven, here on earth. That’s everlasting life!

No sickness, no pain, no lack, no want. That’s everlasting life!

A life of purpose, abundance, fulfillment. That’s also part of the package called everlasting life.

As it is in heaven, that’s how it is on earth!

That’s the kind of life that Jesus Himself lived here on earth and He wants you to lead the same.

Genesis 1:1 is a verse that everybody should be really familiar with. It says,

“In the beginning, God created the heaven and the earth.”

The first time I really meditated on this verse, the verb ‘created’ literally jumped out to me.

Note how the verse did not say,

“In the beginning, God began to create the heaven and the earth.”

Rather, in that verse, we have the past tense form of the verb ‘create’

This implies that in the beginning, God had already completed the creation of everything that needed to be created in heaven and on earth. He had already met every need that would ever be needed on the earth. God had already provided answers for every question that would ever be asked on earth. God had already dished out more than enough wealth and provision for everybody in each generation that would ever tread upon the face of the earth.

In the beginning, it was already finished.

In the beginning, the deal was already completed.

Right there, in the beginning, all prayers had been answered and all needs met.

In that very first verse, everything that would be necessary for a successful life had been created for every single individual that would be born.

Yes, in the beginning, everything was already completed in the spiritual realm of abundant perfect forms!

That’s why God did not bother creating anything on the physical earth for the remainder of the creation story.

All He did was to speak into physical manifestation everything that He knew was already present in the spiritual realm.

Little wonder that 2 Peter 1:3 says,

‘According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue’

Note how the verb is in the past participle form. God created you for glory and virtue and that is why in His Divine Power, He has given us every single thing that we would need to enjoy a full and godly life.

There’s more than enough for everybody.

There is more than enough resources.

There’s more than enough power.

There is more than enough for every single individual that has tread, that is treading, and that will ever tread the surface of this earth.

You were not created to manage through life. No! You were created to enjoy abundance here on earth. But you’d never walk in this abundance if you do not have the consciousness of this abundance. You would never access this wealth available to you if you do not have the consciousness of the fact that there is more than enough to go around.

However, this wealth is a spiritual reality and if you lack the consciousness of the fact that everything is created twice, you would be cheating yourself out of the abundance that God has made available for you.

 

My Consciousness Story

I remember a time when I was in a desperate need for a job. I was reaching my breaking point because I was starting to get really overwhelmed by my current situation. You know, it’s funny how all the Bible knowledge you’ve accumulated over time seems to desert you in the time of your need.

Anyways, God being faithful started reminding me of this very fact that I am sharing with you – you need to be conscious that there is a spiritual realm, as well as the physical realm. I started gaining my consciousness of the fact that I had everlasting life within me.

This was when it occurred to me that I would be doing myself a great disservice if I lived without a consciousness of the invisible abundance available to me at any given time.

It was like someone switched on my brain! My worries dissolved like a pillar of salt in water.

Since I made that shift in consciousness, I started becoming very thankful for getting a job. If you had seen me during that period, you would have thought that I won the lottery. Such was my happiness and excitement because of my consciousness of the abundance present in the spiritual realm of perfect forms.

Within two months, I got a job.

As I mentioned earlier, your consciousness is one of the most potent forces that govern the quality of your experiences on this side of eternity. The moment you start becoming conscious of the fact that there is a spiritual realm of perfect forms, it’s only a matter of you walking up to the aisle you want and picking up the items you need – be it peace, health or wealth.

As believers, we are the children of Light – but Jesus laments over us because the children of this world are living much better than we are.

This shouldn’t be so.

The very word ‘Christian’ means that we are like Christ!

It means that we are ‘little’ Christs.

Do you really think that if Jesus was physically present on earth today, He would be overwhelmed with bills, illness, worries and challenges of life?

Of course not!

Jesus knew who He was.

He knew where He was from and He knew where He was going. He knew the essence of who He was!

So, why is the experience of many believers so different from that of our Model – Jesus Christ?

It’s really simple!

We do not not know who we are.

When you possess an understanding of your identity, it influences the kinds of thoughts you have; which in turn influences the kind of words you speak; which in turn influences the kind of actions you take; which in turn would ultimately influence your character and the results you get out of life.

Understand this: Until we can get a fuller picture of who we are, as believers, we would keep on having challenges in this side of reality.

To understand the import of this reality, we need to take a trip back to where it all began.

When God created man, man was created to be in God’s class of being.

Man was made in the image and likeness of God.

To make man, God had to breathe out a portion of Himself into man.

“And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.” (Genesis 2:7)

As in, He took off His very Essence and Being – the very Nature that made Him God.

God took that and inflated man with it.

Consequently, Man became a bundle of God’s raw, fresh and Divine Inspiration.

Man was made to be like God.

He could think like God.

He operated like God, manifesting the very wisdom of God.

What’s more, God gave man absolute and total dominion over everything that was on earth.

Little wonder the Bible says in Psalms 82:6,

‘I have said, ye are gods; and all of you are children of the Most High…’

And to show you that the above statement was not a mistake, Jesus repeated the same words again,

‘…ye are gods…’ (John 10:34)

Man was created to be god on earth.

He was created to exercise dominion and authority here on earth.

Genesis 1:28 says, ‘And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion…’

If you look at the trend of things, despite being in a fallen state, man has somehow been able to exercise his God-given mandate to rule and dominate.

Man has been able to make wonderful innovations and inventions.

He has been able to create beautiful works of art and cure previously incurable illnesses.

Man has been able to dig deep into the heart of the earth and find mineral resources to improve the quality of his life.

Man has also been able to extend his influence beyond the earth through space exploration.

Man was created to have dominion and not to be dominated.

Yet so many believers are living mediocre lives, being dominated instead of exercising dominion.

Many believers are living far below what God had in mind when He created them.

Little wonder God would say we ‘…all have…come short of the glory of God’ (Romans 3:23)

After the Fall, man’s spirit became degenerate. In other words, his spirit was cut off and totally separated from God’s life. In short, man’s spirit man was dead!

Today, the fallen man’s spirit is still there, but it’s as good as it’s no longer there because it cannot function the way God had designed it to function.

Because of all these, mankind learned to become sensual, carnal – living solely through his five senses. He was totally unable to contact the depths of the spiritual realm.

The spiritual realm is the causal realm from which all things are created.

2 Corinthians 4:18 says,

‘While we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen: for the things which are seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen are eternal’

The only way you can look at something that cannot be physically seen is through the spirit.

Unfortunately, the fallen man’s spirit was dead, and he could only catch glimpses of the spiritual realm via trial and error as he yielded himself to God. This explains how inventions, works of art and some form of creativity could still be exhibited by man in the fallen state. By trial and error, man could draw out of the spiritual realm and reproduce imperfect versions in the physical realm.

Then Jesus entered the picture…

Here’s what Jesus came to do on earth:

He came to restore mankind back to the life of God.

Consider Ephesians 2:1-6,

‘And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins; Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience: Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others. But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us, Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;) And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus’

If you are a believer in Christ, your spirit man (or subconscious mind) has been quickened, regenerated and renewed!

It has already been restored back to the state Adam’s spirit was before the fall!

Your spirit man is just like Jesus (check out Ephesians 4:24).

Isn’t that awesome?

So, while unbelievers look at the state of man before the fall and start having wishful thinking about how bad things have gone since the original sin; you as a believer, can look back at the state of man before the fall and start to thank God for the state that Jesus Christ has restored you to!

Glory to God!!!

But there’s still another problem

Why is it that despite the fact that we have been restored back to the life of God in our spirits, we still seem to live the kind of ordinary, mediocre lives?

Why is it that we are still existing in far below the glory that God has bestowed upon us, when it is a fact that, right now, we are exactly like Jesus?!

Wow! Now, a lot of eyes are rolling at that question.

I don’t have time for arguments.

1 John 4:17 says,

‘Herein is our love made perfect, that we may have boldness in the Day of Judgment: because, as He is, so are we in this world’

That is very profound.

The Bible did not say, ‘as He was while on this earth, so are we in this world’

You know, it would surely have been awesome and quite fulfilling for many of us to find out that we can live the same way that Jesus lived while He was on earth. After all, He raised the dead, healed the sick, made the maimed whole, preached the gospel far and wide…

But that isn’t what 1 John 4:17 is saying.

Look again,

‘…as He is, so are we in this world’

That is in the present continuous tense!

It means that as Jesus Christ is right now, that is the same way that we – as believers – are in this world.

So, the question now is this: How is Jesus Christ right now?

For one, Colossians 1:15 says that Jesus is the Image of the Invisible God. So, by inference, we also are the image of the invisible God!

Why?

‘…as He is, so are we in this world’

This truth has the potential to revolutionize your life.

And I’m not even started!

You know, when Philip asked Jesus to show Him the Father, do you remember Jesus’ answer?

‘…he that hath seen me, hath seen the Father’ (John 14:9)

Jesus was saying in essence that if one looked at His words, His actions, His deeds, He clearly mirrored the Father.

Little wonder 2 Corinthians 3:5 tells us that we ‘are manifestly declared to be the epistle of Christ’

This simply means that if any unbeliever has any doubts about how Jesus is, such a person should just look at me!

Why?

‘…as He is, so are we in this world’

See, the truth is that as a born again believer with the Holy Spirit resident within you, you are like-for-like, ounce-for-ounce, pound-for-pound exactly like Jesus Christ.

You have the mind of Christ (1Corinthians 2:16, Philippians 2:5)

You have His Spirit, and you’re One Spirit with Him (Galatians 4:6, 1 Corinthians 6:17)

You have His Nature (2 Peter 1:4)

You are joint-heirs with Him, having the same access to the Father that Christ has (Romans 8:17, 29)

You have His righteousness (2 Corinthians 5:21)

All these are your real reality!!!

So, if that’s your real reality in the realm of the spirit, why are you still having problems living from the wealth embedded within your very being?

The reason you still live the same kind of ordinary life you lived before you got saved is because you have an identity problem!

You see, after spending so long living from the soul (i.e., your five senses, your will, your emotions, and intellect) before we came to know Christ, we had already been so used to having the soul in the driver’s seat of our lives. As a result, even when we now have quickened spirits reconnected to the life and nature of God, we still do not know how to live from the wealth in our spirits.

Take note that the problem has changed from being separated from God to being ignorant of the wealth within us.

And there is only one reason why you are ignorant of who you are in the spirit: You are not looking into the mirror.

Look at 2 Corinthians 4:18,

‘But we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord’

The glass/the mirror reflects the image that is standing before it!

So, if you are seeing the glory of God in the glass, it’s because YOU are then glory of God standing in front of the glass!

What then is the mirror? You may ask.

Let’s check out James 1:23-25,

‘For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass. For he beholdeth himself, and goeth his way, and straightaway forgetteth what manner of man he was. But whoso looketh unto the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man is blessed in his deed’

Many of us look into a physical mirror for so long in the morning. And any little chance we have to pass by any reflective glass, we step by it to assess our looks, our dressing, our accessories, and all. Now if any chance comes and we are asked to describe how we look, it is not difficult for us to do so, despite the fact that we are not seeing ourselves at the moment?

Why?

Simple. We have gazed at so many reflections of ourselves all day long and we know how we look.

The same thing applies in the spiritual realm.

The spiritual mirror is the Word of God.

The text we just read tells us that if a man hears the word and does not do it, such person is like an individual who has gazed at himself in a mirror and then forgotten what he looked like.

The thing is that many people have heard or read about these things that I’m sharing with you now. But they do not see the manifestation of it in their lives because they refuse to believe in the mirror of the Word that they have just heard. These people have gazed at the Mirror of the Word only briefly and have forgotten the kind of person that they are.

For instance, do you know that since you are born of God, you can never run out of options and be stranded in life?

Try telling that to a carnally minded believer.

But it is a basic truth of the Word!

1 John 2:20 says,

‘But ye have an unction from the Holy One, and ye know all things.’

We are born of God and we have an unction from the Holy Spirit. The verse did not say, ‘you know some things’. No! It says, ‘you know ALL things’. You don’t have the ability to be confused, stranded or at a loss. It is no longer in real your nature to do so.

That is so profound.

Now, when you tell a believer such truth, he is gazing at the Mirror of the Word at that moment, and he is excited at the truth that he cannot be stranded.

But just give the typical believer a day or two, and you’d find him battling with the same challenges he or she should be triumphing over.

You know why?

Such believer has forgotten the manner of man that he was!

This is because he has refused to check himself in the Mirror of the Word to see who he really is in the God’s sight.

You need to remember who you are, by gazing into the Mirror of God.

The word ‘remember’ comes from two root words, ‘re-’ and ‘-member’.

So, when you are ‘re-membering’, you are in essence reassembling and reconjuring every member that constitutes you into your mainstream of consciousness!

You have to look into the mirror of the Word of God and have the faith that the description you find is accurate. You need to experience yourself as who you are in Christ – in God!

God’s Words are infallible. You’ve got to produce and manifest what God has declared the real you to be in the mirror of the Word

When you look at a physical mirror, do you disagree with the image you see reflected because you don’t feel that’s the way you should look?

Of course not! You have absolute faith that the mirror is showing you the accurate description of who you are in the physical. The same applies in the spirit!

You have to have the absolute faith that the mirror of the Word is the accurate description of who you are in the spiritual realm.

The more you gaze at the mirror of the Word, the more you see yourself in the light of who you have been created to be.

When you gaze into the mirror of the word continually, you find out that you were designed to walk over sin, sicknesses, temptations, precarious circumstances, challenges of life and yes – the devil!

Once you constantly gaze upon the mirror of the Word, you’d realize that the way you think starts to change.

Romans 12:2 says,

‘…be transformed by the renewing of your mind’

Many are not living at the highest versions of themselves possible.

It is impossible for this to be so when you have not elevated your perception of reality from just what you can sense with your five senses.

It is until you change the way you think in the light of who you are in Christ that you would find your actions and deeds the following suit to conform to your spiritual reality.

Let’s look at 2 Corinthians 3:18 again,

‘But we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord’

Note the phrase, ‘…are changed into the same image from glory to glory…’

I have said it before, and I am saying it again. You do not have any other problem but an identity and consciousness problem!

The more you gaze at the mirror of the Word of God, the more the way you think changes.

The more the way you think changes to conform to the realities of your spirit man as described by the Word of God, the more you manifest the glory of God – which is who you are in the Spirit.

The more you manifest the glory of God physically, the more victory you would experience over sin, sickness, poverty, lack and whatever the devil throws at your path.

So, stop living unconsciously.

Get this: It’s man’s second nature to live unconsciously; but it is his first nature to be spiritually conscious!

You have now been armed with the tools that would set you on the path to the best days of your life yet.

Speak, think and act as the God on your inside!!!

Low Information Diet: The Breakfast of Champions

I read a lot of books because I write a lot…

Or maybe I write a lot because I read a lot.

Oliver Wendell Holmes once said, “A mind that is stretched by a new experience can never go back to its old dimensions”. Since books are compendiums of experiences, it is safe to assume that reading books can stretch the mind into new frontiers.

Last year was a great year of reading for me…I think I read about 50 – 60 books.

Pretty impressive, right?

However, I am starting to find out that I had been going about reading books the wrong way. I realized that I was focusing on ‘just-in-case’ information, rather than ‘just-in-time’ information. ‘Just-in-case’ information leads to action paralysis which is often due to mental clutter fluttering through the mind. You’re merely accumulating information just for its sake. You really don’t need that!

What you need is ‘Just-in-time’ information which would give you a competitive advantage over anything that life may throw at you.

When reading the story of David and Goliath, many people fail to realize that the war between the Israelites and the Philistines was that prolonged because of ‘Just-in-case’ information.

Take a look at the following verses from 1 Samuel 17:1-7, 16.

“Now the Philistines gathered together their armies to battle, and were gathered together at Shochoh, which belongeth to Judah, and pitched between Shochoh and Azekah, in Ephesdammim. And Saul and the men of Israel were gathered together, and pitched by the valley of Elah, and set the battle in array against the Philistines. And the Philistines stood on a mountain on the one side, and Israel stood on a mountain on the other side: and there was a valley between them. And there went out a champion out of the camp of the Philistines, named Goliath, of Gath, whose height was six cubits and a span. And he had an helmet of brass upon his head, and he was armed with a coat of mail; and the weight of the coat was five thousand shekels of brass. And he had greaves of brass upon his legs, and a target of brass between his shoulders. And the staff of his spear was like a weaver’s beam; and his spear’s head weighed six hundred shekels of iron: and one bearing a shield went before him…

…And the Philistine drew near morning and evening, and presented himself forty days.“

How were the Israelites able to measure Goliath’s height with stunning accuracy? Six cubits…and a span. It doesn’t get more accurate than that!

How were they able to know that his helmet was made of brass, and his coat made of mail…without even touching him?

How were they able to know that Goliath’s spear weighed six hundred shekels of iron, or that his coat weighed five thousand shekels of brass…all the way from the mountain where they were standing?

All these unnecessary information kept the Israelites captive to one man. For 40 days!!!

If they had put down their compasses, set squares, French curves and protractors, and simply got down to attacking the Philistine army, they might have had a shot at winning the battle.

If you can take this, you would be on the right path of simplifying your life greatly: Not every information is important!

I know this post started with mere accumulation of information from books, but it’s much more than that!

There are several of you reading this right now, who have been held captive to information overload from gossip blogs and news sites. For others, it is their Facebook feeds and emails. Still, others more (including yours’ sincerely), it is your favorite football team. You know your team’s latest scores, their transfer targets and the jersey numbers of everyone on the team – including the B team!

Regardless of the type of information, our minds are just being bombarded time and time again with ‘just-in-case’ information that we do not need.

I mean, who gives a rip about whether Kim Kardashian was really tanned or not?

How is knowing ‘the number of times Jon was stabbed when he was murdered at Castle Black’ going to benefit you?

Goliath was trending and David didn’t even know!

This simple fact of David choosing to be ignorant about Goliath’s attributes and well-informed about the attributes of God positioned him for victory. What Saul and the Israelites saw as too big to defeat, David saw as too big to miss!

 

The Tetris Effect

If you’re old enough, I am sure you should be familiar with Tetris. You know, that game where you had to arrange falling blocks into empty pockets of space at the lower part of your game screen. If you were not able to do this fast enough and the blocks got to the high enough to stop more blocks from falling, it was game over.

Well, some scientists decided to have some more fun with this game.

So, they got a bunch of Tetris lovers and made them play the game for extended periods of time – up to hours a day for weeks!

Here’s the interesting thing that happened next.

The gamers started seeing everything around them like, wait for it…falling blocks!!!

It was terrible. I can almost imagine one of the participants just sitting there chilling and busy figuring out the kind of block that would fit into the space between two cars following each other!

However, you shouldn’t be surprised with the findings. The Bible had been right all this while and it’s always nice to see science finally catching up with the Word.

Whatever you focus on continually would manifest in your life!

This is why Proverbs 4:23 says, ‘Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.’

A lot of people are not are not diligent with what they allow to go into their hearts. This can happen in two major ways:

  1. A lot of people are focused on all the wrong things. We are all aware that if you focus on the negatives, you would lead a stifled life. I’m not going to dwell too much on this.
  2. A lot of people are focused on too many right things at the same time! I’m more concerned about this second way because it is much more prevalent in our day and time.

Back in the days, I used to think it was cool to be focused on so many things at the same time. In fact, I used to pride myself on my ability to multitask because I had multiple talents. However, if you go through the path of trying your hands on everything you come across, you would find yourself living under the illusion of being an expert when in the real sense, you are not. It would also force you to be spread out too thin – since you are simply trying your hands on everything and not spectacular in anything. Man was not made to be spread out thin. Rather, he was created to have depth!

This is why I say multitasking is the highway to mediocrity because the only thing you become good at doing is doing multiple things poorly!

 

There Is A Better Way

I have said it before – God is The God of Principles.

Sadly, we live in a generation that gets the order of God wrong every single time:

We first try to accumulate the information we think we need and then we try to ask God to approve our agenda. When we find out that the agenda does not work out, we dump it somewhere in the recesses of our brain – alongside the information we gathered with it.

Wasting precious time and mental resources.

And then, we look for the next shiny information source to consume.

The cycle always repeats itself again!

Listen up: God is deliberate.

I do not think He created us to be Jacks of all trades, and masters of none.

Just the same way each cell in our bodies has a specific purpose which contributes to the general well-being of the body, I believe every individual has something specific to contribute to God’s wonderful ongoing story of creation.

The only way to find that specific purpose that God wants you to do with your life is to ask Him to reveal this to you. Only then would it make sense to start accumulating as much information as possible on your highly specific assignment.

We were not created to be spread out thin like shrubs. Rather, God designed us to be trees with depth in Him.

Find your purpose in Him first!

Then you can start building depth in God through the Word and cultivating expertise through accumulating “just-in-time” information within that narrow niche.

The Power of Broken Windows

In the field of criminology, researchers discovered that communities that had buildings with broken windows also had higher petty crime rates.

This led to a very interesting question:

Are the petty crime rates in the community causing more windows to be broken, or the broken windows in the community are attracting more criminals?

It’s pretty much like the ‘Chicken-Egg Paradox’. What comes first: the Chicken or the Egg?

Regardless of what the cause is, broken windows in a comnunity is always associated with lawlessness and crime. As a result, broken windows in the community attract more petty criminals that would break more windows which would attract even more criminals that would break even more windows…this can go on and on, but hopefully, you got my point!

Interestingly, in spite of the resources and efforts spent on improving the intervention and number of law enforcement agents, the antics of petty criminals in the community continued to be on the rise.

For some odd reasons, however, the researchers noticed that as soon as the broken windows were fixed in a community, criminals stopped associating the area with lawlessness – and as a result, crime rates dropped drastically! The fixed windows exuded the presence of law and order, and as a result, the criminals stopped perceiving the comnunity as a crime hotspot.

These findings make up the backbone of what’s now called the ‘Broken Window’ theory.

What’s more? The Bible had been telling us the same thing for a while now.

A classic example is the case of King Saul in 1 Samuel 10:10,

‘And when they came thither to the hill, behold, a company of prophets met him; and the Spirit of God came upon him, and he prophesied among them’

A similar story can be found in 1 Samuel 19:18-24, where not only Saul, but 3 groups of messengers started prophesying by virtue of being where the company of prophets were.

Great! So, how does this relate to me?

It’s simple. There is power in association!

Your associations would go a long way in determining the quality of your experience.

If you decide to associate yourself with 5 prayerful people, soon, you’d be the sixth.

If you associate with 5 millionaires, with time, you’d be the sixth.

It also follows that if you associate with 5 idiots, soon, you’d be the [fill in the gap].

If you don’t like where you’re standing now, check yourself out, you might just be associating yourself with the wrong crowd.

Rejoicing When Passing Through

If there’s anything we need to rehearse in our minds over and over again, it is this:

God loves you and He has your best interests at heart.

The oft quoted Jeremiah 29:11 tells us that God knows the thoughts that He thinks towards us. He says they are thoughts of peace and not evil.

We have to come to the point where we know in the very core of our hearts that God wants the best for us.

3 John 2 tells us that God wants us to prosper and be in good health, even as our souls prospers.

If we are able to reach the point where our minds come into agreement with the truth of unconditional God’s love for us that is already in our spirits, we would be able to respond appropriately when challenging situations arise.

Consider what Paul said to the Phillipians: ‘Rejoice in the Lord always: and again I say, Rejoice’ (Phillipians 4:4).

We would find it easy to rejoice in the Lord if, and only if, we have settled the matter of God’s unconditional love for us in our hearts!

Now, despite the fact that as believers, we have settled the matter of God’s love in our hearts, we would still have some ‘passing through’ moments that creates in us more questions than answers.

The reasons are not too far-fetched:

First of all, we still live in a fractured, sin-affected world under the bondage of corruption (Romans 8:22). This is where we live in, despite not being citizens of the world (John 14:16).

Secondly, we live among people in the world who by their actions give the devil and his demons the right of way in their lives. This is consistent with Romans 6:16,

‘Know ye not that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey’

People are yielding themselves to the devil on a consistent basis, and as a result, they become devil-controlled and would never promote the course of God’s kingdom. Rather, they antagonize God’s perfect plan.

But in spite of all these, we can still thank God, because He causes us to always triumph (2 Corinthians 2:14). The devil tries to take his best shot at us, using the sin-corrupted world and the actions of devil-controlled people. Yet, God is able to turn these situations into something beneficial for us.

Matthew 5:10-12 makes us understand that despite the fact that the devil would inspire people to persecute believers, it would still end in the great inheritance of the kingdom of Heaven…starting from this side of eternity!

The Pharisees in Acts 5:40-42 were evidently not led by the Spirit of God. As there’s no equilibrium in the realm of the spirit, if you’re not Spirit-led, you’re devil-led! So, these Pharisees yielded themselves as tools to the devil for the persecution of the apostles. Yet, the disciples chose to maintain the correct perspective, choosing to see themselves walk in the great reward of the kingdom of heaven. They chose to revel in the love of God, and as a result, they found more strength to go on the offensive for the kingdom.

Friend, God doesn’t tempt with evil (James 1:13), but when temptations and trials do arise, God is able to use it to build patience in us. Patience is simply faith sustained over a longer period of time. And the good news is that when patience has had its perfect work, there’s no limit to what we can believe God for by faith (James 1:2-4).

Once we are convinced in our hearts by our consciences and by the Holy Spirit (Romans 9:1) that whatever sufferings, trials or temptations that we are going through at the moment is not caused by a door we’ve opened through sin (John 5:14) or because we’ve stepped out of God’s grace and Perfect Will in disobedience (2 Corinthiains 2:10-11), then we can rest in God’s love that whatever we’re passing through at the moment would end in joy unspeakable.

With the right mindset, we can rejoice in the Lord always and taunt the devil; telling him that, if he had known the great work that God was using that particular situation to do in your life, he wouldn’t have brought up the challenge in the first place!

God is the master of doing good (Psalms 85:12) and whatever circumstance we may find ourselves in, would always be turned around for our good. With this at the back of our minds, we can boldly say, ‘All things work together for good to them that love God…’
